About Us

Kirsten is a collector of treasures found on market stalls, in antique shops and on beaches. Things such as plates, vases, cups and saucers, shells, feathers, flowers and fruit are fascinating to her and evoke an imagined history. Originally a printmaker, she often incorporates repeat images and patterns in her paintings. Her travels to exotic countries have resulted in sketchbooks full of tiny details and observations of a different culture. These images appear as motifs in her work like hallmarked memories or grid references to another place. Her passion for unique, jeweled and decorated surfaces shows in all her work and she hopes that after looking at a piece many times there will still be a new subtlety or narrative thread to be discovered.

In her paintings Kirsten likes to use fruits, flowers and exotic food packaging that suggest a journey from another country or a rare exotic flavour. She likes to combine a bold modern design with subtle meaning and intricate references . Her painting surfaces are created using maps and images, text and hand-made papers or found fragments. She then overlays paint and marks from observation and memory so that tiny details are still visible beneath.

Kirsten also delights in creating wonderfully eclectic collages using paper, stamps and linen from around the world. Fragmented memories are assembled and held together with pins, stitches and paperclips. She has rubber stamps made of her drawings so the story of her travels is told within the collage, capturing the essence of a time and place.
